An M3U playlist is a plain-text list of media locations: each entry tells a player where to find a song, a video or, for IPTV, a live TV channel. When you subscribe to IPTV, your provider can give you an M3U link, a single web address that returns your personal channel list. Paste it into a compatible player and your channels appear. Here’s how M3U playlists work, what’s inside them and how to use one safely.
M3U is a simple text playlist format. M3U8 is the same format saved in UTF-8 text encoding, and it’s also used for HLS video streams. For IPTV, an M3U link is a URL that downloads your channel list.
What is an M3U file?
M3U started out in the 1990s as a playlist format for MP3 music players, which is where the name comes from. An M3U file is just text: one line per item, pointing to a file on your computer or a stream on the internet. Because the format is so simple, almost every media player understands it, which is why IPTV services adopted it for channel lists.
An M3U playlist doesn’t contain any video itself. It’s more like a TV guide’s index: a list of addresses the player follows to fetch each channel.
What is the difference between M3U and M3U8?
The structure is identical. The difference is text encoding: M3U8 files are saved in UTF-8, which handles channel names in any language, including accented letters and non-Latin scripts. The .m3u8 extension is also used by HLS (HTTP Live Streaming), where a playlist lists the short video segments that make up a stream. Most IPTV players accept both extensions without any difference for you.
What’s inside an IPTV M3U playlist
Here’s a simplified example of a single channel entry in an IPTV playlist:

- tvg-id links the channel to its listings in the TV guide.
- tvg-logo is the address of the channel logo your player displays.
- group-title sets the category, such as news, sports or movies.
- The text after the comma is the channel name you see in your player.
- The next line is the stream address, which usually includes your username and password.
A full IPTV playlist repeats that pattern for every channel, so large playlists can contain tens of thousands of lines.

How to open an M3U playlist
In VLC

In an IPTV player app

In Kodi
- Go to Add-ons, then My add-ons, then PVR clients, and open PVR IPTV Simple Client (Kodi’s documentation).
- Choose Configure. Under the playlist settings, set the location to a remote path and paste your M3U link.
- Under the EPG settings, add your XMLTV guide link.
- Enable the add-on and restart Kodi. Your channels appear under TV.
Keep your M3U link private
Your M3U link usually contains your username and password, so treat it like a password. Don’t post it online or share it outside your household; if someone else uses it, your own streams can stop working.
Be careful with “free M3U playlists” posted on websites and forums. They are often unlicensed, stop working without warning and can point to unsafe sites. A proper subscription gives you a stable, private playlist and someone to contact when something goes wrong.
M3U playlist problems and fixes
- The playlist won’t load: check the link for typos or missing characters, and make sure your subscription is active. Very large playlists can time out in some apps; an Xtream Codes login loads faster.

- Channel logos are missing: the player may not be loading tvg-logo images. Refresh the playlist or check the app’s logo settings.
- Channels suddenly stop: refresh or re-add the playlist. Providers update stream addresses from time to time.
