How to Watch IPTV on VLC Media Player (Step by Step)

VLC media player is free, open source and able to play an IPTV playlist on almost any computer or phone. That makes it the quickest way to test an IPTV subscription or watch at your desk. All you need is VLC and your M3U playlist link. Below are the steps for Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone, plus two settings that fix most buffering in VLC.

What you need

• VLC media player. Download it from the official VideoLAN website or your device’s official app store. Avoid third-party download sites that bundle extra software.
• Your M3U playlist link. This is the web address your IPTV provider sends you. VLC can’t use an Xtream Codes username and password, only the M3U link. Not sure what that is? Read what an M3U playlist is.
• A steady connection. About 10 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K.

How to watch IPTV on VLC for Windows

1. Open VLC and choose Media > Open Network Stream, or press Ctrl + N.
2. Paste your M3U playlist link into the network URL box.
3. Select Play. VLC loads the playlist and starts the first channel.
4. Open View > Playlist, or press Ctrl + L, to see every channel. Double-click a channel to switch, or use the search box to find one by name.

Tip: press N for the next channel and P for the previous one while a stream is playing.

How to watch IPTV on VLC for Mac

1. Open VLC and choose File > Open Network, or press Command + N.
2. Paste your M3U link into the URL field and select Open.
3. Choose Window > Playlist to browse and switch channels.

How to watch IPTV on VLC for Android and iPhone

Android

1. Install VLC for Android from Google Play and open it.
2. Go to More, then New stream.
3. Paste your M3U link and tap the arrow to start.

iPhone and iPad

1. Install VLC for Mobile from the App Store and open it.
2. Tap the Network tab, then Open Network Stream.
3. Paste your M3U link and tap Open Network Stream again.

Save your playlist so you don’t paste it every time

On Windows, once the playlist has loaded, choose Media > Save Playlist to File (Ctrl + Y) and save it as an .m3u file. On a Mac, use File > Save Playlist. Next time, just double-click the saved file to open all your channels. Keep the file private, because it contains your personal playlist link.

How to fix IPTV buffering in VLC

1. Increase the network cache

VLC keeps only a small buffer by default. In the Open Network Stream window, tick Show more options and raise Caching to around 3000 ms. To make it permanent on Windows, go to Tools > Preferences, choose All under Show settings, open Input / Codecs and set Network caching (ms) to 3000.

2. Change hardware-accelerated decoding

In Tools > Preferences > Input / Codecs, set Hardware-accelerated decoding to Automatic. If a stream still stutters or shows a green screen, try Disable instead; older graphics drivers sometimes struggle with certain streams.

3. Check the basics

VLC’s limits, and when to use something else

VLC is perfect for a quick test, but it isn’t built as a full IPTV player:

• No TV guide (EPG), so you can’t see what’s on now and next.
• No Xtream Codes login, so movies and series aren’t organized into menus.
• No catch-up or favorites management.
• Very large playlists can take a while to load.
